Critiquing the Normalization of Surveillance: Journalists’ Discourses

Despite evidence of mainstream media coverage contributing to the justification of mass data collection, the journalists we interviewed were broadly critical of these practices. They (a) acknowledged the increasing normalization of datafication, (b) raised concerns about limited public knowledge of the extent of data collection, and (c) critiqued media’s contribution to providing justifications for it.
